Southernisms up North

I've lived up in Yankee land for over a decade now. I'm pretty well adapted to the way of life here-- but Aaron knows that should an opportunity arise for me to move back south, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But for now, I'm content where I am. God has placed me here for a purpose, and I like to think that I am serving Him by being here.

That being said, there are a few things that I still cling to from my Southern upbringing. For instance, if I'm getting ready to do something or go somewhere, I'll usually say, "I'm fixin to go to the bank, do you need anything?" to Aaron. He's used to that one. I still love grits. Gimme sweet tea, any time of the day or night. It's a part of my bloodstream.

However, I forget that while my son has my blood flowing in his veins, he does not have the Southern experience that my husband has. Which explains why he didn't understand what I was saying the other day... he crept up behind me and startled me. I jumped and said, "Sheesh, TPJ, you scared the tar outta me." He said, "The what?" I just told him that he scared me badly. :)

Maybe my mama's right. I need to get my kids down South more often, make sure they grow up multicultural, bi lingual, and knowing which part of the country is the best... :) Even though TPJ won't eat grits, he'll guzzle sweet tea. Maybe I'll just start Starbuck on grits, instead of oatmeal! :)

While you may be thinking you'll be happier if you have to chance to move down south - you will do nothing of the sort! If you move that far away, there'll be no chance we'll move closer to you ... (I'm not saying there's much of one now, I'm just saying ...)

I bet Starbuck will like grits.

Young lady, I do declare! You sure wil get my feathers ruffled if you move back south! Now you may be the purtiest thing in high cotton down there, but if I don't see you in a coon's age, I'll act right addled!

Now I'm busy as a stump-tailed cow in fly time, so I'll be gawn now!
